A Dietetics emphasis in Nutritional Sciences will learn about basic science, anatomy, and how foods effect the body. For example a student will learn different types of diets for people with restrictions, how your body processes foods, and creating diet plans. But the fun doesn't stop there- you have to complete an extensive (and pricey) internship to earn RD credentials.
The great thing about becoming an RD is that you can take it almost anywhere! You can work in a clinical setting, for a sports team, writing articles for a magazine- heck, even at a Hawaiian resort! Eating right is relevant just about everywhere.
In fact, that's what led me to choose this path. I like the idea of being able to switch settings if I didn't like where I was working. I know that I have a passion for nutrition, and having choices about where I work will always make me happy (ok and you can make a lot of money too).
Everyone seems to have something to add to the nutrition conversation. Practically EVERY popular news website has a health or food section. The biggest leader is EatRight. It would be fair to say that they have a monopoly on all things nutrition. They are the organization that approves internships for grads, but they also provide news to the public.
There are numerous scholarly nutrition journals. The Annual Review of Nutrition is a big one based out of Palo Alto, California. You purchase a subscription, or read online. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is published in Maryland, and you can buy an online text. Lastly, the Cambridge University journal, Proceedings of the Nutrition Society is available with a membership.
When preparing for college, you kind of assume that no one is ready for this...no one knows what they want to do with their lives....but they do! After reading my classmates' posts, I realized that there are a lot of passionate freshman that I go to school with. Lia is in CALS, which is the college that I'm in, and Allison is studying psychology. They are both passionate about their studies, and so am I!

ReplyDeleteIt's great that you've found something that you're interested in and excited to pursue in college. It sounds like a great program. I found it interesting that the internship is pricey. It's counterintuitive to have to pay to work, but I guess it makes sense if you're getting alot out of it and if it's in a field with potential for high salary. Best of luck!
The fact that you can move around so much is really interesting and I never thought about that. For the internship, is that something you do after you graduate college or during college?

ReplyDeleteThat's kind of smart, though - choosing a major that you can take anywhere. At least you'll (hopefully) always love your job!
